Bladderwrack

Bladderwrack, a sea vegetable, provides nutritional support to the nervous system and heart in the form of minerals and cell salts. A diet including Bladderwrack has been determined to lessen rates of breast cancer, obesity, heart disease, rheumatism, arthritis, infectious diseases gastro-intestinal ailments and lowers blood pressure. Bladderwrack not only absorbs iodine from seawater, it also sponges up an enormous supply of essential nutrients and delivers them to the thyroid and the rest of the body. These nutrients include protein, essential fatty acid, carbohydrates, fiber, trace elements, sodium and potassium salts, and a variety of other chemicals, such as alginic acid. Additionally, the trace mineral content of Bladderwrack is among the highest of any known single source.

Bladderwrack is said to nourish the thyroid gland and so maintains healthy metabolism and balanced glandular function. Goiter, a swelling of the thyroid related to lack of iodine, and hypothyroidism are both said to be effectively treated by the use of Bladderwrack.

When obesity is a direct result of thyroid disorders, Bladderwrack may be of some help in weight control by boosting the thyroid's metabolism. There have been some reports that Bladderwrack has also reduced cellulite deposits. Because of its high iodine content, many nutritionists assume that by stimulating thyroid function, Bladderwrack will increase metabolism and the rate at which the body uses energy and, consequently, decrease fat deposits.

Bladderwrack is considered a mild laxative. The alginic acid in the herb swells upon contact with water and increases fecal bulk and has also been used in controlling diarrhea. Some claim that the same swelling application appears to form a type of "seal" at the top of the stomach, helping to relieve heartburn.

As a metabolic stimulant, Bladderwrack has been thought to be useful in cases of fatigue and convalescence.

Bladderwrack has a reputation as an anti-inflammatory for relieving rheumatism and rheumatoid arthritis when used internally. When used externally, it is also a topical application for the relief of inflamed joints.

Used topically, Bladderwrack is used to soften the skin and is included in creams, lotions and used in spas. It is very popular in the west of Ireland (where it grows profusely) and rubbed on the body to stimulate circulation, promote soft skin and a healthy glow, and it is also used in slimming treatments and on cellulite patches.

Contraindications: Those who are suffering from hyper-thyroidism, have heart or kidney problems or are pregnant or nursing should not use this product. Bladderwrack should not be taken in large amounts (many times the recommended dose), as it may increase pulse rate, cause tremors, hyperthyroidism and elevated blood pressure.
