The native people used the bitter bark of the Black Willow to soothe headaches, fevers, arthritis, and rheumatism. The bark contains salicin or salicylic acid, which was copied to make aspirin. Once again, this chemical is found throughout the plants, but its highest concentration is in the cambium. Brewed in tea, it will relieve pain, reduce inflammation and lower fever, much like the poplars. Topical uses (cambium or leaves) include insect bites, minor burns and skin irritations.
