Stress

Medical Definition: Stress is simply a fact of nature -- forces from the outside world affecting the individual. This interplay of forces, or energy, is of course present in the relationships between all matter in the universe, whether they are living or not living. However, there are critical differences in how different living creatures relate to their environment. Because of the overabundance of stress in our modern lives, we usually think of stress as a negative experience. But from a biological point of view, stress can be neutral, negative, or positive.

Stress has driven evolutionary change (the development and natural selection of species over time). Thus, the species that adapted best to the causes of stress have survived and evolved into the plant and animal kingdoms we now observe. Humans, because of the evolution of the brain, especially the part called the neo-cortex, are the most adaptive creatures on the planet. This adaptability is largely due to the changes and stressors that we have faced and mastered. Therefore, we, unlike other animals, can live in any climate or ecosystem, at various altitudes, and avoid the danger of predators.

Stress is a normal part of life. But people respond in different ways to events and situations. One person may find an event joyful and gratifying, but another person may find the same event miserable and frustrating. Sometimes, people may handle stress in ways that make bad situations worse by reacting with feelings of anger, guilt, fear, hostility, anxiety and moodiness. Others may face life's challenges with ease. But, if left unmanaged, stress can lead to emotional, psychological and even physical problems, including coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, chest pains or even irregular heart beats.
