Leucorrhea

Medical Definition: Leucorrhea is the excessive discharge of fluids from the vagina other than the menstrual blood. It is physiological when it shows a few days before or after menstruation, is colorless or whitish, odorless, and non-irritating.
However, when pathological, it gets colored, offensive, thick, and acrid, producing lower abdominal discomfort, lower back pain, and itching of the vulva.

The cause of leucorrhoea is always pelvic congestion. This congestion due to increased blood flow towards the uterus and vulva can occur due to bacterial infections, fungal infections such as candidiasis, or due to uterine pathologies such as fibroids or endometriosis. However, the commonest cause is fungal. The congestion causes excess secretion from the mucus producing glands in the genital tract as the body is naturally trying to flush out the invaders or intruders. This changes the pH levels inside the vagina making it more acidic and acrid which in turn produces itching and also affects the chances of conception by killing the spermatozoa.

Thus, directly or indirectly, food habits and a good exercise regime play a very important role in the prevention and cure of this ailment. If one’s blood sugar levels are controlled and the immunity is raised by consuming the right kind of food which provides all the necessary nutrients, this condition can be easily overcome. Also, exercise improves the blood circulation and tissue oxygenation, thereby replenishing the energy reserves of the body. A regular bath with warm water and a strong soap can also help in many of the cases where the cause is lack of personal hygiene, especially at the muco-cutaneous junctions like the urethra, vagina, anus, and mouth.
