Medical Definiton: Acid indigestion - excessive secretion of hydrochloric acid by the stomach cells. Medically known as hyperchlorhydria. Sometimes used interchangeably with heartburn. Heartburn: An uncomfortable feeling of burning and warmth occurring in waves rising up behind the breastbone (sternum) toward the neck. It is usually due to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the rise of stomach acid back up into the esophagus. Heartburn has nothing whatsoever to do with the heart. It is a popular nonmedical term. It is medically called pyrosis.

As with a heart attack , indigestion can cause burning in the chest. But according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, it's unlikely that pain from indigestion would spread to other parts of the body, as a typical heart attack does.

Indigestion, frequently accompanied by nausea, often stems from eating too much, too quickly, or the wrong kinds of foods.

If you have any of these symptoms, they could indicate something more serious than simple indigestion: vomiting, weight loss, or appetite loss,
black, tarry stools or blood in vomit; what feels like indigestion accompanied by shortness of breath; pain radiating to the jaw, neck or arm; or sweating.
